iPhone Duo – the first foldable iPhone. What does it mean for the GSM accessories market?

The foldable iPhone has become a reality. Apple unveiled iPhone Duo, the first foldable phone in the brand’s history. However, the launch of iPhone Duo means more than just introducing another model. The new design, foldable display, two screens, and a hinge can also influence the development of the GSM accessories market.

For manufacturers, distributors, and sellers, a new device category emerges, which requires a different approach to protecting the casing and displays. At the same time, the new foldable smartphone remains part of the USB-C, MagSafe, and Qi2 ecosystem.

iPhone Duo – the first foldable Apple phone

Apple unveiled iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It is the first foldable Apple phone, which, when closed, functions like a compact smartphone, and when unfolded, offers a significantly larger working area.

The external display Super Retina XDR is 5.4 inches, while the internal display reaches 7.6 inches. Both support ProMotion, and the internal foldable display received a nanostructured finish that reduces reflections and the visibility of the fold.

This design means that iPhone Duo has entirely different protection requirements than classic iPhone models.

Foldable display means new ways of protection

The biggest change is the two screens. The outer screen can be protected similarly to a classic smartphone, using protective glass or film.

The protection of the inner foldable screen is different. The protective material must work with the foldable display panel and maintain its properties during repeated opening and closing of the phone.

For the GSM accessories market, this may mean further development of flexible films and protections designed specifically for foldable devices. Thus, one foldable iPhone may require different solutions for the outer and inner screens.

The hinge changes the case design

Apple’s first foldable smartphone introduces yet another important element – the hinge. Its cover and the device’s frame are made of grade 5 titanium.

The case for the iPhone Duo must therefore work with the two parts of the device, not restrict its folding, and simultaneously protect the casing. Official Apple accessories already show one direction of development for this category – the Duo case uses a two-piece design.

Therefore, for the first foldable iPhone, precise fitting of the accessory will be even more important than with a classic phone design.

iPhone Duo and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold – the market is already familiar with foldable smartphones

Although the iPhone Duo is the first model of its kind in Apple’s offering, a foldable display is not new to the GSM industry. Samsung has been developing the Galaxy Z Fold series for several generations, and the current lineup includes, among others, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra.

With the development of this category, dedicated cases, camera protectors, and products protecting the outer screen and elements of the foldable design have also emerged. Partner Tele.com already offers accessories for Galaxy Z Fold models, so the foldable iPhone does not create the market for foldable accessories entirely from scratch. However, it may significantly increase interest in this category and accelerate the development of new products.

Foldable iPhone specifications and GSM accessories

The foldable iPhone’s specifications show that despite the new design, Apple has retained solutions known from the current ecosystem. The iPhone Duo uses the A20 Pro chip, has a dual battery system, USB-C, and supports MagSafe and Qi2.

This means that the new foldable smartphone requires entirely new cases and screen protectors, but many universal accessory categories remain relevant. This includes, among others, wall chargers, USB-C cables, power banks, and devices using Qi2.

Also, fast wired charging remains an important part of the equipment. Therefore, the new phone form does not mean building the entire accessories market from scratch.

iPhone Duo price and availability

The price of iPhone Duo in Poland starts from PLN 9999. The phone will be available with 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB of storage.

Available iPhone Duo colors are Starlight White and Midnight Blue. Pre-sale of iPhone Duo will begin on October 16, while regular sales will start on October 23, 2026.

The high price of iPhone Duo positions the device in the premium segment, where smartphone protection and additional accessories can be particularly important.

What does iPhone Duo mean for the GSM accessories market?

The launch of iPhone Duo opens a new category in the Apple ecosystem. A foldable display, two screens, a hinge, and the device’s two-part design mean different requirements for cases and protections than for classic smartphones.

At the same time, market experiences with series like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold show that solutions for foldable devices are already being developed. Apple’s entry, however, can increase the scale of this segment and manufacturers’ interest in new types of accessories.

Apple’s first foldable phone is therefore more than just another smartphone launch. It is also an important signal for the GSM industry that devices with a foldable display can become an increasingly important part of the market.
