iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max – what changes does the new generation bring and what GSM accessories are worth having in your offer?

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max is a comparison important not only for people considering changing their smartphone, but also for sellers of GSM accessories. The new generation brings changes in camera, performance, battery, and charging speed, while retaining some structural elements of its predecessors. For brick-and-mortar stores, e-commerce, and service centers, this means the possibility of utilizing part of their existing assortment, but also an opportunity to expand sales with new cases, screen protectors, chargers, and MagSafe accessories.

After the official presentation of Apple iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, we can now compare the new models with Apple iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max based on actual parameters, not pre-release leaks. From a business perspective, the most important question is not “what did Apple change?”, but primarily: how do these changes affect accessory compatibility and how to build an offer?

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max – key differences

Apple did not decide on a revolution in device dimensions. The iPhone 18 Pro still measures 150 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, and the 18 Pro Max 163.4 × 78 × 8.75 mm. These are the same dimensions Apple reported for the 17 Pro series. However, the weight has changed: iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 g, and Pro Max 249 g. For comparison, iPhone 17 Pro weighed 204 g, and 17 Pro Max 231 g.

The new generation uses the Apple A20 Pro processor, while the 17 Pro series was equipped with the A19 Pro. Dynamic Island has also been reduced, and the main Fusion 48 MP camera received a variable aperture. According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro Max provides up to 43 hours of video playback, while the 17 Pro Max offered up to 37 hours.

At the same time, Apple retained True Tone technology, HDR technology, ProMotion up to 120 Hz, Face ID, USB-C connector, NFC, Dual SIM, and IP68 durability rating. The new models run on iOS 27. From the perspective of a GSM store, the generation change therefore does not mean the need to replace the entire accessory ecosystem.

iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro Case Compatibility – What to Look Out For?

This is where the comparison of iPhone 17 vs 18 becomes particularly important from the perspective of the accessories market.

The external dimensions of the iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro, as well as the Pro Max version, have remained the same. This might suggest full compatibility of existing cases with the new generation. In practice, however, simply fitting the phone into the case is not enough to consider the case properly compatible.

The most important difference appears with the camera.

For the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, the most important difference from the case's perspective does not concern the phone's dimensions themselves, but the design of the lenses within the camera island. The housings of both generations are dimensionally very similar, which is why cases previously prepared for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max can also be physically fitted onto the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models, and the buttons retain their functionality. However, a problem arises with camera protection – the lenses in the new generation are taller, so the lip around the camera module must also be taller. In an older case originally designed for the 17 series, the lip might not protrude above the lenses and thus might not provide them with proper protection.

This is an important distinction from a sales perspective. The ability to physically fit a case does not equate to full protective compatibility. If the edge is below the surface of the lenses, the camera may come into direct contact with the ground when the smartphone is laid on its back.

Therefore, older models originally prepared for the 17 Pro series should not be automatically assigned to the new generation solely based on identical dimensions.

The situation is different for cases already designed with the launch of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in mind. A higher camera edge can provide adequate protection for the new generation, and at the same time, such a design can remain compatible with the older iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max.

From a business perspective, this is particularly beneficial: a well-designed new product can support two generations of devices, simplifying inventory management and reducing the risk of creating unnecessary stock.

The screen remains familiar, but the Dynamic Island is changing

iPhone 18 Pro retains its 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, and the Pro Max its 6.9-inch display. The resolutions also remain at 2622 × 1206 and 2868 × 1320 pixels, respectively. Dynamic Island, True Tone, HDR, and ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz are still available.

However, the Dynamic Island area itself has changed. In the new generation, Apple has reduced the space occupied by the camera and Face ID sensors, which allowed for a reduction in the island’s size and an expansion of its functionality.

What does this mean for sellers of screen protectors for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max? Similar to cases, it’s not advisable to assess compatibility solely based on screen diagonal. You should be guided by the specific product’s designation.

In practice, there is also a significant opportunity here to reduce the number of SKUs. The current offer from Partner Tele.com includes, among others, screen protectors designed simultaneously for iPhone 17 Pro Max / 18 Pro Max, as well as protections supporting several models and generations.

For a brick-and-mortar store, this means simpler display. Instead of several almost identical products, one product with clear compatibility information for several models can be displayed.

iPhone 18 Pro Camera – greater phone capabilities, greater protection potential

One of the most important iPhone 18 changes is the camera. Apple continues to use the 48 MP Fusion camera system, but the main camera in Pro models has received a variable aperture. The user has ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0 values available. This change allows for better control over the amount of light and depth of field.

For a GSM retailer, more important than the technology itself is the fact that the camera remains one of the most expensive and exposed components of a smartphone. With the device’s launch, it is therefore worthwhile to present the customer not only with a case and screen protector, but also with a camera lens protector.

Partner Tele.com’s offer already includes camera module protectors prepared for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, including Blue Star Easy Install variants made of 9H tempered glass and with a mounting applicator.

This product is particularly well-suited for cross-selling: a customer buying a new phone or case can immediately be offered a complete device protection solution.

USB-C stays, but iPhone 18 Pro opens sales of more powerful chargers

In terms of the connector, Apple is not changing direction. The USB-C connector in iPhone 18 Pro supports charging, DisplayPort, and USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s. Compatibility with a wide range of USB-C cables, chargers, and other accessories therefore remains.

Much more interesting is the charging speed.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max can be charged to 50% in about 20 minutes using a 40W or higher USB-C power adapter. With Apple iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple has shortened this time to about 15 minutes, but a 60W or higher power adapter with appropriate voltage regulation is needed to achieve this result.

This is very specific sales information.

The launch of iPhone 18 Pro increases the validity of having USB-C chargers of 60W and higher in the offer, especially models supporting USB Power Delivery. Of course, this does not mean that the smartphone draws 60W all the time – this is the power adapter’s wattage required by Apple to achieve the declared fast charging result.

Therefore, when selling kits, it is worth combining the new iPhone or its accessories with an appropriate power adapter and a USB-C cable capable of transmitting the required power.

MagSafe and Qi2 – no need to start from scratch here

When it comes to wireless charging, there is no revolution. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max support MagSafe and Qi2 with up to 25 W of power. The 17 Pro generation offered the same maximum MagSafe power.

From a B2B perspective, this is good news. The introduction of a new generation of smartphones does not mean the need to replace the entire range of magnetic products.

It is still worth strongly highlighting MagSafe-compatible accessories in the offer: magnetic cases, wireless and Qi2 chargers, car holders, desk stands, or magnetic power banks.

What’s more, the compatibility of selected cases with both generations allows combining two sales arguments – smartphone protection and access to the ecosystem of magnetic accessories.

Battery and greater weight – Pro Max focuses even more on battery life

One of the more noticeable differences in the specification of the iPhone 18 is battery life. According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro Max allows video playback for up to 43 hours, whereas the 17 Pro Max offered a maximum of 37 hours. For the smaller model, the result increased from 31 to 34 hours.

The change comes at a price in the form of increased device weight, but for accessory sales, the ability to build a broader offering around intensive smartphone use is more important.

A customer choosing the Pro Max version for its battery and performance is a natural recipient not only for cases, but also for a car charger, a MagSafe mount, a power bank, or an additional USB-C cable. Instead of selling a single product, an entire set can be built to match the way the phone is used.

What accessories for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are worth having in your offer?

When building an offer for the launch of a new generation phone, we should not focus solely on the technical fit of cases. Today's customer expects a wide selection in terms of design, functionality, styling, and color.

After the launch of the new generation, the most important thing is not to increase the number of SKUs at all costs, but to select the right categories. A well-prepared offer should include cases for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, screen protectors, camera protection, MagSafe and Qi2 compatible accessories, and USB-C chargers and cables.

It is particularly worth noting four elements:

  • multi-model products – cases and screen protectors with confirmed compatibility for both iPhone 17 and 18 allow for reducing the number of SKUs;
  • accessories complementing protection – it is worth combining case sales with screen protectors and camera protection;
  • USB-C chargers 60 W or more powerful – the new charging speed of iPhone 18 Pro gives the seller a concrete argument for upselling;
  • MagSafe and Qi2 – the standard remains current, so the existing range of chargers, holders, and power banks can still perform well in sales.

The core of the offering should be based on several main product types: transparent TPU, transparent hybrids, hybrids with TPU sides and smoked PC backs, as well as silicone and carbon cases. Each of these variants should be available both with MagSafe and without MagSafe. Such a set allows to meet basic customer needs and build a solid sales base.

The same range of choice should include both OEM and branded products. The difference between individual segments should not be limited solely to the case construction, but also to the quality of workmanship, design, and additional functionalities.

An important element of building the offer should also be the inclusion of new colors, such as with the launch of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. The device's color scheme should be reflected in every segment of the offer – both in basic products and in the design segment, as well as in premium and fashion collections. Particularly in the case of transparent and semi-transparent cases, appropriate color matching allows the phone's color to be highlighted, while in the case of full, silicone, or designer cases, it provides the opportunity to create cohesive collections responding to current color trends.

The offer should therefore be built not only around a specific phone model but also around its new color variants. This allows for the creation of a cohesive portfolio in both the basic segment and in more design-oriented and premium collections.

Beyond the basic offering, it's worth developing the design segment, where additional details, patterns, materials, and functionalities that make a product stand out become key. Forcell is a good example of a brand that combines these features. It's also worthwhile to expand the fashion offering with brands like Guess, Karl Lagerfeld, or NIMMY, which cater to customers looking for more distinctive and unique products. For premium brands, customer expectations are significantly higher – the customer seeks not only phone protection but, above all, uniqueness, the ability to stand out, and a product that emphasizes their style.

Therefore, with the launch of a new generation, it is worth building an offer across several price and product levels – from basic, functional models, through the design segment, up to premium and fashion products. Each of these segments should simultaneously consider the color schemes of the new models, so that the offer is consistent both functionally and visually. Such a structured portfolio allows reaching various customer groups and avoiding situations where sales rely solely on one type of case.

How to leverage the iPhone 18 launch in store and e-commerce?

The mere presence of accessories on the shelf is not enough. The new generation should also be utilized to organize the way products are presented.

First and foremost, compatibility must be clearly communicated. If a specific product fits the iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro, it is worth showing both models already in the product name and store filters. A customer looking for an accessory for a new phone will find the product faster, and the seller gains the ability to further sell the same SKU to users of older generations.

The second element is sets. A case + screen glass + camera protection create a natural protective package. Additionally, a USB-C charger or a MagSafe product can be included. In e-commerce, a similar effect can be achieved through “buy together” sections and related product recommendations.

It is also worth utilizing the new device colors. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are available in black, silver, glacier blue, and burgundy. A color-matched display of cases and camera protectors helps create a more cohesive offer and gives the customer an additional reason to choose a specific accessory variant.

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max – new generation doesn't mean replacing the entire stock

From the perspective of the GSM accessories market, iPhone 18 Pro Max vs 17 Pro Max proves to be an interesting case of evolution rather than a complete design change. Apple has improved performance, camera, battery, and charging speed, but has maintained device dimensions, screen diagonals, USB-C, and the MagSafe and Qi2 ecosystem.

For a B2B customer, this means the possibility of combining two strategies. On the one hand, it is worth quickly introducing products dedicated to the new generation, especially camera protection and accessories that leverage greater charging capabilities. On the other hand – the confirmed compatibility of selected cases and screen protectors with iPhone 17 and 18 allows for continued use of part of the existing stock and limits unnecessary duplication of indexes.

This is particularly important in the first weeks of the new generation’s sales, when customers are looking for phone protection right at the time of purchase. A well-prepared store should be ready not only with cases, but with a full ecosystem of products – from screen and camera protection, through MagSafe, to fast USB-C charging.
